The Valley of Despair

June 8, 2006

I came across this great illustration of an adult learning curve at Jim Eidelman’s Learning Curve Tips. Check it out.

I use this curve when discussing the end user component of roll-out or upgrade planning. We strive to make each user’s Valley of Despair as shallow and narrow as possible. Listening, surveying, and observing end users are important components to pre-rollout planning. Often there is much we can do before a rollout to smooth the way for our end users.

I really feel pain when working with a group, post rollout, and it becomes evident that no one truly took the time or effort to understand what users would need those first few days afterthe change. 😦
